A-list Names: A guide to this week’s trials

Accused serial killer Andrew Luster “became tearful” during his testimony and said that a previous boyfriend abused him, and said he kept a knife at home. Mr. Luster said he was a professional photographer at the time of the attacks and produced photographs that showed a man whom he said was Mr. Luster and his identical twin brother, as well as a photo of an Asian man dressed as a priest.

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, said that in 2013, the biomedical company that her company built in Palo Alto, Calif., did not have “dozens” of lab machines. Prosecutors said Ms. Holmes presented company sales reports to prospective investors in which the company claimed to have multiple devices, without any evidence to prove those claims.

The daughter of Ronald Freitas, the former federal prosecutor who led the prosecution of O.J. Simpson, sat in the courtroom for the trial. On Friday, prosecutors asked for the name of Ms. Holmes’s biological father. Ms. Holmes’s mother is the founder of Blue 449, a pharmaceutical company, and her father is the retired police chief in Palo Alto. Mr. Freitas served as chief of the Palma High School police department in Palma, Calif., from 1993 to 2006.

Theranos has three clinics in Palo Alto, one in San Jose and one in Mountain View. Prosecutors also said that a Theranos security guard, Francis X. Marait, was found lying in the parking lot of one of the clinics after he had failed a test. The security guard reportedly would continue to work with Theranos during the investigation.
