‘Here is a reminder: We do not have a police state!

A Kenyan jumper killed in a road accident in Mexico was buried in her home village on Monday in the wake of an emotional funeral and mourners demanding action by authorities.

Agnes Tirop, 33, died while preparing for a track and field race in Cancun in February.

Her father and more than 100 friends and family members attended her funeral at a Muslim cemetery in the coastal town of Mombasa, roughly 350 miles (563 kilometers) south of her home city.

Mourners said the government, police and the courts failed to provide protection from drugged drivers, who often drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“What happened to her is very common in Kenya. We are used to it. But the question is: ‘Where is the government?’ You will never see the government doing anything about this,” said Karen Juma, a friend of Tirop.

Tirop’s funeral also was attended by several politicians, including Rt. Hon. Julius Samboja, minister for Lands and Natural Resources; Hon. Lorna Laboso, minister for Health; Hon.
