Despite this sinking admission, “trawlergate” looks like opening a Pandora’s box for the rest of Brexit. So now we know the French want to take the Conservative position, but it does look as if the Tories are going to have to try very hard to avoid handing Theresa May a humiliating deal before the departure from the EU scheduled for March next year. The ship, Proteau Nexite, is supposed to have been set up by a Belgian fishing group called Tiger. That group is now saying it’s a voluntary coastal community run by 44 fishermen who were separated from the ship on 15 May. They also say the boat was being fired on by a NATO helicopter. The French say it was actually cruising in French waters at the time.
How the Lib Dems were going to bring down the government on Brexit on Tuesday – appeared in the face of one of the biggest spending and borrowing nightmares the country could have. As the battleship ship turned its turret towards Downing Street, at least we were listening to Basil Fawlty as the Treasury had spent more than a quarter of a billion pounds on pyschological damage control this week. On the school-leaver taxation, they just didn’t get the hang of it.
That’s from Mark Rowley in Westminster… also today….
