Spanish team Real Sociedad take a one-point lead over Napoli at the top of the La Liga standings after winning their match 3-0 over relegation-threatened Levante.

Gerard Pique and Kevin Gameiro put Real Sociedad in control of the game after 19 minutes. They then doubled their lead midway through the second half through a second goal from Gameiro.

“We knew this would be a tough game,” admitted Madrid player, Pique. “We scored three good goals and then managed to defend well for the last 25 minutes.”

Gameiro added: “The club wanted to play well in front of the fans here at the Anoeta and have a good result.”

Real Sociedad goalkeeper, David de Gea had a quiet game, but it was down to his teammates to impress.

Juso wanted to know if Gameiro is open to making the move to Napoli? “Do you want to know if I think that is a real possibility or not?” the striker replied. “Of course there is a chance and I am focused on the team and my job.”

Another win for Real Sociedad keeps them in sight of their first title in their 109 year history.

Real Madrid were not as fortunate as Real Sociedad with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a wonder strike against last season’s runner-up Atletico Madrid in their 3-2 victory. The 25-year-old nether known as simply a “Madrid striker” to Atletico fans, instead was hailed as a Karim Benzema when the striker suffered an injury against Napoli.

Atleti had never beaten the champions in 15 attempts prior to that night in May.

Ronaldo puts Madrid top

Ronaldo had six shots on goal and created another four for Madrid teammates and emerged victorious.

“I always said that I want to try to score more goals,” Ronaldo said after the match. “It is true that it is one of my best nights because it came against a good team.”

Ronaldo celebrated five trophies in 2017/18 and is currently one goal from equaling or surpassing Cristiano’s record of La Liga, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup and Club World Cup goals in one season.

Atletico and Barça clash in Madrid

There is only a six-point gap between the two top teams.

Valencia host Atletico on Sunday after the champions Messi and Luis Suarez rescued a draw for Barcelona against Barça.

Barca haven’t lost at home since February and are now two games away from a historic 40th title. Messi will chase Messi as he shoots down the all-time scoring list and is only 165 goals away from tying the Brazilian’s tally.

One of the dead-rubber clashes for the title will also see Sevilla play Athletic Bilbao in the San Mames, less than 36 hours after a bruising penalty shootout defeat to Juventus in the Champions League.
