Two detained in shooting near Texas university

A murder investigation is underway near the University of Texas at El Paso after police say one person was shot and two others were arrested Wednesday afternoon.

A witness said two men — one with a gun and one with a hatchet — were chasing three more men, shooting at them, before setting off a small explosion, according to KTRK, the local affiliate of CNN.

Two people, believed to be the attackers, have been arrested, an El Paso Police Department spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRIS.

One person was shot and hospitalized, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is working with El Paso police. Two other people were also hospitalized with injuries. Police have not confirmed details about the shooting.

At least one of the arrested people was injured in the “explosion,” according to KRIS. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, or who the person was injured in the blast.

Police had been on the lookout for the suspects — said to be armed with firearms and what appeared to be hand grenades — since reports came in of a “shooting” near campus, DPS said.

Video from KRIS showed armed men on foot outside one of the buildings, which contained what appeared to be a building on fire. Authorities had not yet made a statement about what had happened.

UMEP says some residents are being directed to shelter in place.
