Vice President Pence dismisses Joe Biden’s migrant child care proposal as ‘absolutely unacceptable’

Vice President Mike Pence has dismissed a proposal by his former rival Joe Biden to invest billions of dollars into migrant child care, calling it “totally unacceptable.”

Mr. Pence’s reaction to Mr. Biden’s proposal came after the former vice president repeated his call for an increase in aid to migrant families seeking asylum and called for the involvement of a “bridge corporation” to help families seek legal entrance into the United States.

“It is completely unacceptable to taxpayers to see thousands of families deported in the dead of night. It is completely unacceptable to have children separated from their parents,” Mr. Biden said in a speech on Friday at the annual Commission on Presidential Debates in St. Louis.

Mr. Biden’s proposal in part would require private nonprofit groups to manage a large number of migrant families. He said that these groups have already offered to take in about 25,000 families in Texas, but Congress has refused to allocate the additional resources.

“The question is, what is Congress going to do?” Mr. Biden said. “And the answer is you can’t get it done in six weeks. Not pass it in six weeks.”

Mr. Pence responded by saying that Mr. Biden’s proposal would force taxpayers to foot the bill.

“Americans don’t want their tax dollars used to pay for human trafficking,” Mr. Pence said on the Fox News show “America’s Newsroom.” “This is totally unacceptable and the American people are united in saying we don’t want our tax dollars going to help human traffickers.”

A spokeswoman for Vice President Pence said he “makes no apologies for fighting for the American taxpayer.”
